Narcissists’ 7 Favorite Catchphrases

#1: YOU CAN TRUST ME.

Normally, they say this in response to something where you felt like you couldn’t trust them; I will give you an example. I was in a small, very brief business arrangement with someone, and this person put money that was supposed to go into the business account—money that had been generated by the business—into her own personal account. When I questioned her about where the money was, she said she had to put it in her personal account because she didn’t know how to put the money into the business account.

Do you smell BS? Yeah, I did too. When I confronted her, she said she would put the money back into the business account, but claimed she didn’t know how to do it. Then she said she had to “classify” it first and wanted to talk to her CPA or bookkeeper to figure out the best way to transfer it and record it properly. Honestly, it was all just excuses. Total BS.

The whole time, she kept saying, “You can trust me.” That right there was the biggest red flag. She was a covert narcissist, and when someone like that says, “You can trust me,” it usually means you shouldn’t. They say it when they know something feels off.

So here’s the truth: trust your gut. If it doesn’t feel right, it isn’t. Don’t trust them.

#2: STOP INTERRUPTING/ATTACKING ME.

Again, they normally say this in response to you trying to make a point, you trying to get them to take responsibility for something. Maybe it’s something that you want for yourself from them. They project and deflect by saying that you’re attacking them or that you’re interrupting them. Maybe you’re catching them in some sort of a lie. So, “project” and “deflect” are two of the ways that they handle that.
